3 Key Areas by Which The Aspiring Driving Instructors are Judged



If you are aspiring to be a professional driving instructor, you will be subjected to a very harsh final test, and that is quite expected. You will be picking up a career wherein you are expected to help your trainees to obtain their driving licenses at one go.

That is the reason the examiner will keep a strict vigil on a few parameters, and see if you are prepared enough to be a mentor — mentally as well as technically.

During the final test, the examiner will look at how you can anticipate faults, the ways they are corrected, and the process you will follow to instruct your trainees.

These are called ‘core competencies’, which are fault identification, fault analysis, and remedial actions. These are there three areas where you will have to accumulate most assessment points if you are to become a driving instructor in NSW like in any other place in Australia.

Fault Identification


You need to take stock of all the potential faults that a trainee can show during a test, and think how you can identify them at the earliest.

You need to have a very strict vigil on the trainees as they drive. You need to get familiar with their driving style, so much so that you can ascertain their subsequent step well in advance. It will help you to spot even the slightest of deviations from that pattern or norm.

You need to develop the skill of asking the right question to the trainees at the right moment. Learn to ask them what they are doing if they were driving alone. Also, see if their answer is different from the norms. This will help you ascertain the extent of knowledge they have gathered through the training.

Fault analysis


Spotting flaws in the trainees will not be enough. You need to ascertain the root cause behind the flaw. Were they not listening to your instructions properly? Were they not attentive enough? Or is it that they were absent-minded and hence skipped the road conditions?

You will be able to rectify the simple faults as you continue giving the training, but only if you can identify them early.

Correcting the faults


Ostensibly, it is the end aim of identifying the faults and analysing the root cause behind them. It must be done at the earliest so that the trainees do not develop these wrong steps into habits.

Then again, you need to know the right process of rectifying these faults. You will be evaluated on this as well, to see if a trainee can depend upon you when they take driving lessons before they appear for a driving test to obtain a license in NSW or any other part of the country.
